Bow Valley Cartographic Almanac
Sulphur Mountain 2,281 m · Cave Avenue notes
You do not need a car to reach the lower terminal, and on many summer days you should not try. Roam Route 1 from downtown Banff is the civil way up Mountain Avenue. The parking lot is a known capacity with a turnaround that becomes a mood when it is full. I have watched both from the Cave Avenue side of town for years.
Route 1 is a town bus, not a gondola annex. It runs a schedule. It fills. It is still better arithmetic than circling a lot that has already decided. If you are staying in Banff proper, walk to a Roam stop and let the bus take the hill. If you are coming from a valley hotel with a car, look at the lot reports and still have a bus plan. Mountain Avenue is a dead-end idea with a mountain at the end of it. That is why the turnaround exists. That is why it fails at noon.
Parking capacity is the unphotographed half of the eight-minute ride. A cabin that is fast cannot unstick a lot. I have seen people abandon a visit at the turnaround and call it the mountain’s fault. It was arithmetic. Arrive earlier than your pride prefers, or ride the bus, or pick a day that is not a holiday Saturday with a clear forecast that everyone else also read.
Walking up from town is a fine summer exercise and a poor winter approach. Ice on Mountain Avenue is not a trail. Save your legs for the boardwalk stairs. The lower terminal is a machine room with a ticket mood, not a trailhead with overflow camping.
Official bus changes, lot notices, and seasonal hours live with the operator and with Roam, not with me. Use the Collection homepage for the mountain’s public face. Use this sheet for the geometry: a town bus, a finite lot, a turnaround, and a haul rope that does not care how you arrived until you join the dispatch.
Coach groups use the same hill. They do not make the lot larger. If a convoy is unloading when you arrive, the arithmetic has already been done without you. Roam still beats circling. I have never seen a cabin go faster because someone idled in the turnaround with the heater on. The mountain is patient. The lot is not.
